So Your Hair Is Starting to Thin?

Hair loss is distressing for any man! When you first notice his hair is thinning you feel like a world is tumbling down around you. The first stage is often denial, sure you only see the thinning bits sometimes, or only from some angles.  However over time it will be apparent to you that you are really losing your hair. But your only 40 or 50 or 60 you can't live without your hair?  Hair loss can greatly affect a man’s self-esteem and can lead to depression.

Well, welcome to the club.  You are not alone, but its cold comfort, I know.

The stats on hair loss are something like:

Age                        percentage of men with noticeable hair loss

35                                           66%

50                                           85%

(Ref. 1)

Male pattern baldness (MPB accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men) can begin at the age of 21.

The cause of hair loss is very well-known is just difficult to stop, and reverse.

If your hair loss really concerns you, I suggest you see the general practitioner to recommend a reliable hair treatment specialist. There are many charlatans in the business of hair loss prevention and hair restoration, a recommendation from a reliable source is essential to finding a treatment specialist you can trust.

There are a couple of medical solutions you may want to try, but these may not work for you and  they can have undesirable side-effects.

For most men, like me, living with and managing your hair loss is the most appropriate way to go. However, the age at which hair loss begins, and also the rate of hair loss, varies from into individual to individual, the question is “can you live with your situation”. Here are some suggestions to managing the early stages:

  1. Camouflage
  2. Re-Establish
  3. Hairpiece
  4. Acceptance

We will talk about camouflage in this article. Typical techniques for disguising thinning hair are:

Hair Fibres

Hair Fibres are electrically charged particles and adhere to the fine hairs remaining on the scalp, they blend with and cover the areas of low density hair growth, with the result of looking like thicker hair.  As with most personal care products there are good fibre thickeners and not so good fibre thickeners.  The quality products bond well to the remaining hair strands and appear natural, even on close inspection.  More importantly they won't come off in the wind, rain, or from sweat, staying in place until the next wash.

A couple of examples of hair fibres are:

There are many more hair fibre products on the market, I suggest you try several to find the  one that best suits you.

Thickening Shampoo

Thickening shampoos and conditioners have ingredients that attach to each individual hair shaft and expand the diameter. This effect multiplied over the entire head can drastically change the appearance of your hair, especially if you just started thinning and still have some hair covering most of your scalp. Typically their ingredients are chosen mainly for thickening purposes, but sometimes they also include DHT blocking (DHT is the chemical that causes hair loss) ingredients and or natural ingredients good for the hair.

Because hair thickening shampoos work by artificially swelling the hair shaft and depositing a thin film of the active ingredients on the hair strands, hair thickening shampoos tend to create residue build-up over time if used daily; this build-up of residue will then require a stronger shampoo such as a clarifying shampoo to have it (residue) removed.

Several thickening shampoo products readily available are:

Change Hair Styles

If your thinning hair is becoming visible and you can’t be bothered disguising it (or no longer want to carry the cost), perhaps bite the bullet and cut your hair as short as possible. Short “all round” will balance the thinning areas. It’s a tough call to cut off  those long locks you may have worn for many years, but to be honest most men do it sooner or later in any case, thinning or not.  You may just need to do it a little sooner than most.

Go Completely Bald

Still look unbalanced?  Perhaps consider shaving your head?

Most men never resort to this, but let’s face it completely bald head does suit some men.  If your game give it a shot. But bear in mind that a bald head is not maintenance free. There is regular shaving, moisturising, keeping the skin clean. You will most likely need to wear sunscreen and/or a hat  during the in the warmer months.

I guess it doesn’t matter what camouflage options you choose to manage your thinning hair, just remember -  Never Comb Over!
