The Sin Tax For Popular Junk Foods

We all do it.  We have just picked up the kids from sporting activity, on your way home, its late, you don’t want to cook, and the kids want some takeaway.   And there is nothing wrong with a bit of high fat high salt takeaway occasionally, so long as it is occasional.  Aside from the long term health issues associated with high fat diets, there is also the total energy consideration.    The body functions on an energy in/energy out balance.  If you consume more calories that you burn then you will gain weight. 

We have calculated the activity time required to burn of calories from common fast food, and considered some activities common for an average middle aged man to do.  The “typical man” taken for this analysis is:

Age:                       50

Weight:                  88.8 kg

Height:                 175 cm 

A 50 year old male requires about 8500 Kilojoules per day to stay healthy

Junk food selection for comparison includes some standard fare from KFC, Hungry Jacks (Burger King) and Zambreros, and also a healthier option for their standard menu of each food chain

A couple of observations here:

  1. The “standard choice” of fast food , be it a Whopper from HJs or 3 pieces of chicken from KFC, or a burrito from Zambreros takes  takes over 1 hour (in some cases 1.5 hours) of exercise just to burn the calories
  2. The higher intensity forms of exercise like crossfit or cycling pull this back to a little under 1 hour
  3. The lower fat options from each food chain does have significantly lower energy and fat values and obviously helps with the energy balance
  4. All forms of junk food are very high in fat and sodium.  If you are going to treat yourself, then don’t do it very often
  5. Chips and onion rings have very high fat content per unit of protein provided, in other words very little nutritional value

 

So next time you get some fast food think about the physical activity you need to do just to burn the energy in the food consumed.

It’s still ok to take the kids out for fast food, but remember most chains now offer healthier options.  Why not browse the nutrition guide at each food chain before making your food choice.  The lower fat, lower energy choices are probably best for the middle aged man.  If you really want a burger or fried chicken, or burrito then all that sweat and hard work in the gym is really going to just burning the excess calories consumed.
